The world of beauty introduced us to multi-masking, now it’s time to take this same revolutionary skin care technique and apply it to your hair care routine! In the natural hair world, this is known as cocktailing. Looking for a good hair day? Cocktailing will get you there!

Cocktailing is the process of mixing store bought products with raw ingredients to create a personalized hair product. You can also mix two different products together to make a personalized hair product. This is something that I do with SheaMoisture products all the time.

A very good question comes to mind when you bring up cocktailing- If the product is so good, why mix with other products or raw ingredients? The answer is very simple- we all have different needs. For example, you have a shampoo that you sorta love. You may love the smell, or the texture, but it does not infuse enough moisture in your hair. Mixing a little conditioner would provide that moisture, while still giving you the original properties you love. It’s like putting hot sauce in your bowl of greens, or sprinkling sugar on your strawberries. These items are great as is, but adding more gives it that extra oomph.

I’ve been using SheaMoisture since the first day it debuted. So why SheaMoisture in particular? Unlike most brands that I have encountered since transitioning to natural hair, SheaMoisture leads because of what’s not in their products- mineral oil and silicones, the very ingredients that can make the hair heavy, weighed down and unhealthy. Most importantly, its what’s in their products that keeps me coming back. Like the Organic Shea Butter, or the ultra-hydrating coconut oil, or the neem oil, that keeps my frizzies at bay. Having low porosity hair does not come consequence free.

I have a love/hate relationship with shampoo. I still believe shampoo is a necessary evil to properly cleanse my hair and remove buildup, but shampoo is incredibly drying and recovering from shampooing is a bit of a challenge. I came up with idea to add a little conditioner to my shampoo to give more intense moisture, and still cleanse:

SheaMoisture Shampoo Cocktail Close up

· 2 tablespoons of SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo

· 1 tablespoon of SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner

I mix these two together in a small cup, wet my hair and shampoo away. My hair is left more hydrated than cleansing with shampoo alone. Now it’s time to condition!

There was a time when my hair was severely over processed from bleaching and coloring. My hair is in much better shape than before, but I’m still hooked on using this mask:

· 2 tablespoons of SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Conditioner

· 4 tablespoons of Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque

I make just enough for when I want to use it, apply it, put on a processing cap and let it sit for 30 minutes. After rinsing, my hair is incredibly hydrated.

Tell me: what’s your hair type? Would you create a custom cocktail for your hair to have a good hair day?

SheaMoisture comes in a wide variety of products that will allow you to find the best for your specific hair type. You’ll love SheaMoisture for what’s not in their products, for a good hair day. SheaMoisture is available for purchase at Walmart.

Adding a bit of condish to the shampoo is a genius idea! I started CO-washing to counter the drying effect of shampoo but ended up with a tonne of product build-up. Will try this idea next time!
