Write This Down: Five Products That Every Skincare Routine Needs

5 products every skincare stash needs

There are five basic products that every skincare stash needs to achieve perfect skin. Keep reading below

Exfoliator

Every skin care stash should have an exfoliator or two. Exfoliating is important because it removes dirt deep down in the pores, and removes dead skin. This gives the skin a smoother texture, smaller looking pores, and depending on what scrub you use, a brighter skin tone. The jury is out on how many times a week you should exfoliate, but personally, I do it once a week.

When looking for an exfoliator, take note of the grit size and if it exfoliates mechanically, chemically or both.

My personal picks: St. Ives Scrubs, Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant, Dr. Jart Pore Medic derma@home Peeling System, Ole Henriksen Power Peel

Cleanser

You would think skin cleansing is a duh factor, but there are some people in the world that still wash their face with plain ole water. The right facial cleanser will leave your skin looking youthful and healthy. If you have oily skin, you want an oil or gel based cleanser; if you have dry skin you want a cream cleanser with no alcohol; if you have sensitive skin, you want something fragrance free and free of controversial chemicals like parabens and sulfates.

My personal picks: Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser, Organic Bath Co. Rice Bran Cleansing Beauty Oil, DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

Toner

Yes, you cleaned and exfoliated your skin, you used your Clarisonic and all that. But guess what? There’s a chance that your skin is still dirty. Toner gives your skin that extra hit of cleansing and removes dirt and oil that your cleanser probably forgot about. Don’t believe me? Go wash your face right now, then follow up with toner. See that dirt on the cotton ball? Told you so.

When looking for a toner, you want as less chemical as possible, and I don’t think you should pay over $20.

My personal picks: Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner, DIY Apple Cider Vinegar Toner, Perfectly Pure Rose and Witch Hazel toner.

Moisturizer

After all that scrubbing and cleansing and toning, your skin is probably dry. Most of you correlate that tight feeling with clean skin, but that’s just dry skin. With that being said, it might be a good time to find the right anti-aging cream for your skin. We are not looking for tight skin, we want the skin to be moist, plump and supple. This is something only a moisturizer can do.

People with oily skin have the most trouble with finding a moisturizer. Think gel based. I also personally think moisturizer is the most important product of a skin care routine, so while there are some decent affordable moisturizers on the market, do be afraid to spend a little extra for quality ingredients.

My personal picks: Josie Maran 100% Argan Oil, Organic Bath Co Enhance Face Oil, Neutrogena Pore Refining Moisturizer, Organic Bath Co. Drenched, Lush Skin Drink.

Protector

Everything that you are doing for your skin is being done in vain if you are not protecting your skin. I call this protector sunscreen.  A good part of your skin care products contain ingredients that not only help the skin by evening skin tone, resurfacing and cleaning the pores, but they also harm because they make the skin ultra sensitive to the sun and cause burns or exacerbate hyperpigmentation. Sunscreen slows the absorption of UVA and UVB rays, thus minimizing damage. The easiest way to get your hands on a sunscreen without playing the waiting game for a breakout, is to invest in a BB Cream, tinted moisturizer, or even a primer that has SPF 30 or better, broad spectrum. PA++++ would be a bonus.

My personal picks: Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Protect, L’Oreal RevitaLift Miracle Blur, NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer

No matter what your skin type: normal, dry, oily, sensitive or combo, you need these five products in your skin care stash. When searching for your HG (holy grail) skincare products, remember it’s going to be about trial and error. You might meet products that break you out, if you do, discontinue use and try something else.

Use Google to search for product reviews and check out the skincare routine of a few bloggers. Talk to your friends and ask them what products do they use. Go to a counter salesperson and ask these two important questions: “Which product(s) are popular?”, “Which product(s) do you like?”.

Once you’ve found the products that you love, be consistent and remember, results are not going to happen overnight. I’ve found that most skin care products (for me) take 2-4 weeks to see results.

What are your thoughts? Tell me about your skincare routine.

Very useful post. I need to be more diligent about exfoliating and moisturising regularly. I tend to stop doing that when I have breakouts, and that leads to a vicious cycle of breakouts.

Great post! I’m currently not using a toner though I do double cleanse at night – I start with an oil product that emulsifies when it’s washed off with water. Then I use a very mild facewash, followed by a few drops of jojoba oil (mixed with avocado oil and apricot oil), and when it’s soaked in I’ll follow up with my regular moisturizer.

I only use three regularly: cleanser, SPF and moisturizer. Toners never work out for me and I can’t exfoliate more than once week or I’m red and splotchy for days.

I have got all this in my stash except the sunscreen and I need to invest in products that either have the protection or protection which will work with my moisturiser.

I don’t put a lot of effort into a skin care routine but I really should. I’m more of a simple wash and moisturize kind of girl.
