The Best Drugstore Foundations For Black Women

I am often asked on Twitter what are the best drugstore foundations for black women. This question prompted me to create a quick guide to the best drugstore foundations based on finish, coverage, and shades available. As an added bonus, I linked reviews around the web from black beauty bloggers. Enjoy!

Maybelline FIT Me revamped their foundation line and split it into three product lines: Dewy+Smooth, Matte+Poreless and Shine Free. It seems that during the revamp, they eliminated some of the darker shades, so here’s to hoping they will expand the line.

Dewy+Smooth is best for women with normal to dry skin because it hydrates the skin and leaves it with a dewy finish. Coverage is light to medium, building to full coverage is difficult, so this is the perfect summer foundation if you are looking to avoid heavy coverage in the heat. There is SPF 18 protection in all shades except 330 and 360, so make sure to use a primer with full SPF coverage. There are 16 shades available, the darkest shade is 360 Mocha.

Matte+Poreless is best for women with normal to oily skin looking for a matte finish. Coverage is light to medium, building to full coverage is easier than Dewy+Smooth. This formula works wonders for minimizing pores and smoothing wrinkles. This foundation provides no SPF protection, so make sure you use a primer with some SPF coverage. There are 16 shades available, the darkest shade is 355 Coconut.

Shine Free is best for women with normal to oily skin looking for a more natural matte finish. Coverage is medium and you can build to full coverage. Shine Free is a gel foundation in stick form with an anti-shine core that really dissolves excess oil.  This foundation has no SPF protection, so make sure you use a primer with some SPF coverage. There are 12 shades available, the darkest shade is 355 Coconut.

L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup

There are 33 shades broken down into three undertones: Warm, Cool and Neutral. L’Oreal True Match wins for the best shade choice of any drugstore foundation I have encountered. In addition, L’Oreal makes a powder, blush and concealer to correspond with your skin color and undertones. Coverage is light to medium and provides a natural finish. You can not build to full coverage. Select shades have SPF 17 protection. The darkest shade available is C10 Espresso.

Milani Cosmetics Foundation

If you are a black woman and you have yellow undertones, give Milani Cosmetics a shot. Milani has two lines with shades for black women: Even Touch Powder foundation and Smooth Finish Cream to Powder foundation.

Even Touch Powder foundation is a versatile product that can be used for full coverage with a matte finish, setting powder or for touch-ups. It is best for women with normal to oily skin because of its matte finish. Coverage is medium to full. Medium coverage is best with this formula to avoid caking. This foundation has no SPF coverage. There are 8 shades available, the darkest shade is 07 Creamy Cocoa.

Smooth Finish Cream to Powder foundation applies like a cream and finishes like a powder, making this best for women with normal to oily skin. Smooth Finish’s finish is a soft matte, which is more natural than Even Touch. Coverage is medium to full; you can go full coverage with this foundation with ease because of the creamy application. This foundation has no SPF coverage. There are 11 shades available, the darkest shade is 03 Caramel Brown.

Black Radiance

This is another brand I’m not well versed in, but I know it is a great brand that formulates products specifically for women of color. Black Radiance had three formulas: BB Cream, Custom Coverage powder foundation, and Liquid. The BB Cream is the only product with SPF protection (SPF 15).
