Women Of Color And Red Lips? Yes We Can! And Here’s A Guide!

There is nothing more beautiful to me than a simple red lip. Problem is, I cant get enough women of color to hop on board and share the love of red lips with me. Why you ask- “Because there is not a red shade out there for me”. That’s what I hear all the time and that’s not true. I was aware, prior to posting this, that there are many guides out there about how to choose the right red lipstick for you, But I am sharing anyway, along with some tips from makeup artists and a wonder compilation of African American women and red lips by a fellow blogger (and my blogging buddy). So without further interruption- Glitter.Gloss.Garbage’s ultimate guide to red lips-

When searching for a red lipstick, it’s best to find a shade that works with your undertones. If you are having a hard time understanding your skin tone, read my guide here. If you still don’t understand look at the complexion guide below the undertone guide.

Cool Undertones

blue based lipsticks Suggestions for cool undertones- Blue Based or pink based lipsticks are best. Try MAC Russian Red, MAC Ruby Woo, and Kat Von D Hellbent.

Warm Undertones

orange red Suggestions for warm undertones- Orange red lipsticks are best. Try MAC So Chaud, NARS Heatwave, and Covergirl See Red (even though it looks pink based in the photo above, it’s not)

Deeper Complexions

Cool red shades like NARS Jungle Red fit best. Lighter complexions- Warm red shades with yellow undertones Fair skin- Pure reds are your BFF, like Revlon Colorburst True Red Caramel complexions- Brown based reds like the color of brick- Covergirl Lipperfection Tempt Olive complexion- Tomato reds like MAC Lady Danger Medium skin tones- Berry reds like Covergirl Lip Perfection Euphoria.

Additional Tips

  • Exfoliate those lips. Don’t waste your time spending big bucks on an exfoliator, you can make your own in the comfort of your home.
  • Moisturize under matte lip colors with a good chap stick. All chap sticks are not created equal, I suggest Aroma Naturals, good stuff in there.
  • Fill in those fine lines and wrinkles with a lip plumper such as DuWop Lip Venom, for an outstanding rouge pout.
  • Because we tend to have pigmented and or uneven lip tone, balance it out with a brown or neutral base. Concealers will do just fine. You can also shade the entire lip with a neutral lip liner for fair complexions, or use a chestnut lip liner for deeper complexions.
  • Matte, cream, and sheer reds work better during the day, and a high pigmented, glossy red works better at night
  • Remember to keep the rest of your face simple. The focus is the lips. Opt for a matte foundation, an illuminating blush (natural tone please), well arched brows, liner, a neutral shadow and of course those dramatic red lips.
  • Please don’t match your red lipstick to your outfit, just don’t do it.

Now for the best part. CaShawn of Dirty Pretty Thangs asked black women of all shade ranges to submit photos a while back in their best red lipstick. So many women answered and this video was born! Watch and be inspired!
