5 Tips Sure to Help Protect Your Skin against Premature Aging

It would be a lie if anyone was to tell you that women don’t spend a good portion of the day worrying about what they look like. There just seems to be some genetic factor that kindles a desire to look and act your best at all times and if you don’t believe it, look at how big the cosmetics industry has grown to be.

However, makeup can’t do it alone. If you want to look your best while protecting your skin against premature aging, it’s time to actually do something about it. Don’t let the years slip by without taking a proactive stance on protecting your skin from the ravages of time, personal habits and the environment. 1. Protect Yourself from UV Radiation

For years we have been told to stay out of the sun if you want to avoid premature wrinkling and a number of skin cancers, some of which can be lethal. It was once thought that those acne-causing hormones being secreted just prior to and throughout adolescence would subside as we grow older. While they do, in fact, subside to some extent, there is a time just prior to menopause when they begin working overtime once again. Unfortunately, too many women begin ‘spot treating’ those unsightly blemishes as they begin appearing and that is actually the worst thing you can do. Dermatologists recommend that you use a cleansing product once daily on the entire face so as not to unnecessarily dry out small patches. Follow with a dermatologist approved moisturizer to keep your face from drying and cracking into those nasty fine lines that are a sure sign of premature aging.

3. Find a Moisturizer and Stick with It!

Speaking of moisturizers, one of the most common mistakes women make is to buy a moisturizer and expect it to work overnight. It took years of abuse for your skin to get parched and wrinkled so how can you expect to repair the damage in 24 hours? There is no magic genie in that bottle so give your moisturizer adequate time to do its job. It may take weeks (sometimes months!) to see significant improvement so stick with a good product at least a minimum of 90 days before writing it off as ineffective. One extra ‘tip’ here is to pay heed to the old adage – you get what you pay for. If you are truly concerned with correcting those fine lines, get a high quality, hypoallergenic product even if it costs twice or three times what you are currently paying. If your skin is that important to you, it’s well worth the price!

4. Quit Smoking Tobacco Products

Ah, here is one for the records! There is no denying that smoking causes a number of health-related issues, among which is dry, parched and lined skin especially around the lips. Smoking turns your skin that sickly shade of yellowish brown and also gives off a nasty odor. There is ample evidence to contradict the theory that it is the nicotine in those tobacco cigarettes is not the real culprit! Did you know that the mere act of burning a cigarette produces more than 4,000 chemicals, many of which are actually responsible for premature aging and a great number of cancers? Why not switch to an electronic cigarette that provides varying levels of nicotine to suit your needs but gives off none of those toxic chemicals and some even smell wonderful as well! 5. Cleanse Makeup Nightly

How often have you just been too tired to cleanse your face before turning in for the night? This is a terrible thing to do because all that makeup you have on clogs the pores, keeping your skin from breathing. Also, certain products such as mascara has dye that can dry the skin around your eyes which is the ultimate cause of many of those fine lines that signal premature aging. Here again, quality is essential and if you are going to use a makeup removal cream, lotion or wipe, make sure you purchase a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic product. Fragrance is as bad for your skin as dyes are, so use facial cleansing products with care.

If you do nothing else for your skin, these 5 tips should get you well on your way to a major improvement. It won’t happen overnight but with diligence you really can correct much of the damage that has already been done. No one can hold back the hands of time indefinitely, but you surely can prevent further damage while correcting many problems such as smoking tobacco products at the same time.
