Let’s take a trip back to 1980, back when Adelphi created their first post-mastectomy group. The women that were part of the group felt isolated when they were diagnosed. The newly created group helped women find comfort in sharing their fears, and decided to reach out to other women facing breast cancer too. This was a breath of fresh air at a time in history when breast cancer was not publicly discussed. What started off as nine volunteers working seven hours a week in the local region in 1980, transformed into receiving funding to service the entire state of New York in 1990.
Fast forward to 2014, Adelphi University Breast Cancer Hotline now has a professional social work staff as well as over 100 volunteers who run not only the hotline, but a website as well. They provide counseling, education, and advocacy programs to women in need all over the state of New York.
The hotline helped Adelphi grow even more with the Creative Cups. We have all been affected by breast cancer in one way or another. I personally lost a cousin to breast cancer, and my half sister is a breast cancer survivor. Because I was so young at the time, I’ve never really understood what they went through, or how they felt. The only thing that I can do is be a respectful voice in the fight for breast cancer as an adult. This is exactly what Creative Cups is about.
Participants design and build original works of art using bras, which are exhibited and auctioned at a Gala reception in the spring. All the money raised will go to offset the costs of running the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.
