Blogger How To: Create A Killer Instagram Giveaway

instagram.jpg

Give a blogger a social media platform and we will show you how to create a giveaway with it. Today I will show you how to create a giveaway using Instagram.

With Instagram you can share your photos, choose a filter, publish, and share with followers and other social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr. You are sharing nothing but photos… how can you turn that into a giveaway? Getting your audience to share photos. DUH!

Follow these steps:

Pick your prize

Get a really awesome prize to giveaway!

Edit your photo

There are many Android and iPhone apps that you can use to edit, but I like to use PicMonkey (web-based photo editing site) to edit my photo and email it to myself so I can catch it and download it on my phone.

Create some rules

Make the rules as simple as possible. It’s a given that you want new contestants to follow you; you want users to share your photo. They can do this by screen-capping the photo, or using the regram app to share. Next you want to create a special tag for your giveaway. This helps you keep track of the entries. Make your tag short but sweet, no more than 15 characters if possible. Specify how many times they can enter. The standard is once a day. Create a start and end date. Will your giveaway be US only or International?  I like typing my rules out on notepad, and then copying and emailing them to myself so I can catch it on my phone, copy and paste.

Time to pick a winner

statigram.jpg

This is not as hard as some think it is, there are many ways to track your tags. Use Statigram . Search the tag you created for the giveaway. The pictures are in order with the very first entry being at the end, and the last entry being at the very top. Statigram will specify how many photos there are so let’s say there are 500 photos, that means you have 500 entries. Now go to Random.org and enter your min (1, duh) and max (how many entries you had in total), and hit the generate button. Let’s say random.org picked #55. Go to the very bottom on statigram and count from the bottom up, until you get to #55. That’s your winner!

Announce!

You can use your original giveaway photo or if you are feeling productive you can create another one. If the contest was large (over 100 entries), I find it easier and less dramatic to first contact the winner and get their information. Then I go back and use the photo and announce on my page. That cuts down on contest scamming (yall know what I mean).

And that’s it! You have created your first Instagram giveaway! This is a great way to expand your reach on Instagram and hopefully pick up a few new followers to interact with!

    Hey April,

These are great tips. But is there a way to track the likes on a photo in the order that they were liked? If you know of such an app please let me know.

      Thanks Sharkk,

There is no app that will track in order. If I ever discover one, I will update this and let you guys know!

Trying to use a giveaway to get more followers but it seems as though everyone is just liking the pic and moving on… not actually following me or reposting the picture. I made the rules very clear and got plenty of likes but no complete entries. Any suggestions?

you will need a widget embedded on a blog, like Rafflecopter or Gleam if you want to provide more than one giveaway entry for more than one social media site. It’s easier that way

Is it bad to make the contestants follow you? I promote my online shop to my personal account.

    Reply

    1. GlitteryGlossy

If your account is personal, I would suggest starting an account solely for your business. You dont want your personal reputation to ruin your business reputation. Not saying you do bad things, but it does not take much these days <3

I don’t have heaps of followers, what is a good number of followers to reach before you can announce a giveaway? I wanted to do one on reaching 1000 fan following.

    Reply

    1. Bianca Rose

i like to do a giveaway that ends once i reach a target amount of followers. like a “2k giveaway” that way people are more encouraged to share and ask their followers to follow me. then once i get to the target ammount of followers, eg, 2k (2000) thats when i announce the winner.
