Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is time to start planning for the summer! It’s time to get those vacations planned and booked. It’s time to plan some well-needed R&R and it’s time to shop for swimwear without body insecurity.
Aprill, are you serious?
Yes, yes I am. I figure I’m the best person to talk about body barriers because for years I have let my body become the deciding factor in swimming, hanging out by the pool, and staying cool in the summer. I’m a plus-sized gal, wearing a size 24. After marriage, 5 babies, a bout with depression and anxiety, and an insatiable love for food, I went from a size 16 to a size 24 over the course of 12 years. And, for the most part, I hated every moment of it. I’ve hidden my body in loose dresses and jeans and I avoid human contact for the most part. Weird coming from a blogger, isn’t it? I avoid conferences and meet-ups in fear that people won’t care to befriend me simply because I’m fat. Sure, I’m an awesome person overall, but I never see people like me when I see photos of friends. Most importantly, I don’t wear swimsuits, and I sure in the heck don’t take photos in them.
Over the past year I’ve worked on my thoughts about my body and while the task is not easy, there has been lots of improvement made – enough mental improvement that I went shopping for swimsuits at Target. I’m totally obsessed with the Ava+Viv line, so I had to put my dollars to work by picking up a few swimsuits for the summer. The goal was to find a nice swimsuit that was not covering up my body, yet made me feel confident. No t-shirt and shorts this year? YOU BET!
My local Target didn’t have a wide choice of suits when I visited; everything was black, white, or a combination of the two. I was really gunning for something with color, but I’ll let my makeup take care of that. If you want to be sure you’ll find the full range of options, I suggest visiting Target.com.
The first swimsuit is Ava & Viv Shirred Crochet Tankini ($29.99). It is worth noting that when purchasing this piece, it is only the top. You have to purchase the bottom separately. I loved the lace detail of this swimsuit, which reminded me of lingerie.
The next swimsuit is Ava & Viv Twist Front One Piece ($39.99). This was my second favorite choice out of the three swimsuits I picked. The bra area was perfect for my breast size (40DD) and it looked great with some colorful makeup and accessories.
The last and my favorite (surprisingly) is Ava & Viv Mesh Flyaway Tankini ($29.99). Like the first swimsuit, the bottom is a separate purchase but the most comfortable of them all. I was most concerned with the bra fitting properly and it did! I was surprised how much I loved this strapless piece; have no fear, though, it also comes with a strap that goes along the back for simple adjustment (if needed).
Now that I’ve found a swimsuit that I love, take the #NOFOMO pledge with me! I want you to promise me that you will dance on the beach in your swimsuit, go scuba diving, go to a pool party, or catch some waves with your kids. I know I will be. Remember, Target has free shipping and free returns, so buy as many swimsuits as you wish and return what doesn’t work for you!
