Back in 2010, an announcement was made that Laila Ali, daughter of boxing legend Muhammad Ali, would release a line of beauty and personal care products. Four years later, I review the Ionic Soft Bonnet Dryer.

I’ve always wanted a bonnet dryer, but I was apprehensive thanks to the worries of heat damage and being a mom, I just don’t have the time that it takes to sit under a dryer. So my needs call for something that will protect my hair, and I need 2 hours or less to get it dry; especially in the summer when the kids are at home.

So how have I been styling my hair? Well two options- I roller set or wrap my hair at night and hope it dries in time in the morning (which is does not), or, I throw my hair in a ponytail and keep moving with my life. Horrible I know. Needless to say, I was happy to give this a shot.

Laila Ali Ionic Soft Bonnet features an ion infused airflow that dries hair quickly. It reads that this dryer is perfect for drying roller sets, braids, and processing chemical and conditioning treatments. Other features include:

  • Two heat/speed settings
  • Cool setting
  • Compact storage case
  • Large adjustable soft bonnet
  • 40” Flexible hose
  • Two year limited warranty

Packaging/Case

Soft Bonnet dryer contents

The Ionic Soft Bonnet dryer is securely packaged in a large box. The dryer comes in a hard plastic case in a beautiful shade of purple with Laila Ali in matte taupe letters. Open the case and you will find all the perfectly organized tools to dry your hair: the bonnet, the hose and the power cord. To the left of the hose is hot/cool heat settings, and to the right of the hose is hi/off/low speed settings.

Setting up

Setting everything up is very simple. Very very very simple. Grab the bonnet and look for large plastic reinforced hole in the bonnet. This is where you will connect the hose to the bonnet. Snap it on and move on to adjusting the bonnet on your head and deciding your speed and heat settings.

Adjusting the bonnet on your head was the trickiest part of using this dryer. The bonnet adjusts by a soft pull string. You don’t want to pull it too tight, because I felt a little light headed cause I may or may not have cut off blood flow; but you don’t want it to be too loose because when the speed setting is high, it will slip right off your head. I placed the bonnet right above my brows and tied it there. My max time under the dryer has been (after testing it 5 times) 2 hours, so I had no problems with a tie mark around my forehead.

As easy as it is to set everything up, is as easy as it is to pack it up. The bonnet, power cord and hose packs up easily to fit right back into the case.

Ion technology

This dryer’s most important feature is Ionic Technology. Negative ions reduce the size of water droplets on your hair, allowing more water to be absorbed. This helps to condition, soften, and make your hair shinier while adding volume. The Ionic feature is activated as soon as you turn the dryer on.

Results

I’ve tested this dryer doing more than a few hairstyles:

  • Roller set- 1 hour and 30 minutes; hot heat, hi fan speed
  • Wrap- 1 hour and 15 minutes; hot heat; hi fan speed
  • Twist out- (on my daughter) 45 minutes;  hot heat, low fan speed
  • Deep conditioning- 30 minutes; hot heat, low fan speed

Overall thoughts

This is a great dryer. Keep in mind that dry times will depend on the porosity of your hair, length, thickness and all that jazz. I’ve experienced no heat damage because I ALWAYS use a heat protectant on my hair, even when I’m not using heat. Best of all, I no longer have to sleep in uncomfortable rollers and wait forever for my hair to dry. I can wash, style, dry and go in 3 hours flat.

Laila Ali Ionic Soft Bonnet Dryer retails for a super affordable $44.99. Pick this up at Walmart or lailaalistylingtools.com.
