Life’s A Beach: Beachy Beauty Tips For Brown Girls

My good friend Courtney asked me to write up some beauty tips for a trip to the beach. This is actually an excellent topic believe it or not, because she’s a pretty brown girl with natural hair and we (black women with natural hair) have different needs than the average girl. So here are some essential beauty tips for your upcoming beach vacation!

Less is more

When frolicking on the beach, the last thing you want to do is worry about smudging this product, or that product sliding off. Keep your beauty routine simple- SPF, bronzer, and a lip tint are the only beauty tools you really need.

Make it last forever

Need a little beach side beauty enhancement? Replace your regular lipstick with a red or berry lip stain. These shades not only give the lips a nice touch of color, but even when the stain fades, your lips will still have a red hue.  Cargo Cosmetics also has a very nice line of waterproof cosmetics including blush, bronzer, mascara, eye and lip pencils so check them out!

Get the glow without the damage

Invest in a body bronzer with SPF protection to not only make you look like a bronzed goddess, but protect you from the dangers of sun exposure.

Protective styling is key

Braid it, bun it, twist it or faux loc it, but if you will be spending a lot of time on the beach, letting your hair down just won’t work.

But if you must… wet it first

Whether you are hanging out at the pool or your favorite salty body of water, the hair will soak up less chlorine or salt if the hair is already wet. Chlorine and/or  salt is just as destructive to our textured hair as our fine haired counterparts. Wet your hair first before diving in!

Post beach hair care is a must

If your hair is not in a protective style, it is essential that you rinse well with water, and then follow up with swimmer’s shampoo (they sell some in Sally’s). This will cleanse the hair of chlorine and/or salt that can severely dry your hair. Tame frizz with a little coconut oil to seal the ends.
