A Guide To Micellar Water

Micellar Water

It was last year that I predicted that micellar water was going to become the next big thing. Guess what guys? That day has arrived and it is time to understand why micellar water is here, and why it’s here to stay.

Micellar water by definition is soft water that contains tiny balls of cleansing oil, also known as micelles. These little bubbles effectively remove makeup and gently cleanse the skin without leaving behind an oily residue.  In addition to its powerful cleansing properties, micellar water gives the skin a huge boost of moisture. It’s no wonder people that use micellar water never go back to traditional face wash!

There are two reasons micellar water is so effective:

  1. Soft water contains low concentrations of ions and the presence of calcium, magnesium, and other metals is absent. Soft water is known to make the skin cleaner and softer than cleansing with hard water.
  2. Micelles act as tiny little vacuum bubbles, removing dirt, makeup and sebum while leaving the skin hydrated.

Jami Svay, makeup artist to Freida Pinto and Keenyah Hill, says “If you’re prone to having dry skin Miceller water is for you! It pulls out the oil & dirt without drying out your skin. If you want to try it, slowly incorporate it into your beauty regime, using it only twice a week.”

Micellar water is more progressive than ever, because only a year ago, it was not powerful enough to remove heavy makeup. Thanks to brands like Garnier and Simple, you can remove and cleanse your face with micellar water in a few easy steps. Garnier’s formula is so powerful, it even removes waterproof mascara while cleansing and refreshing the skin.

Simply soak a cotton round in micellar water and gently wipe until the skin is completely clean. Then follow up with your favorite essence, serum or moisturizer.

There are two brands that have all but dominated the micellar water industry- Garnier and Bioderma. Below, I compare the two brands

Garnier Micellar Water

Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water features micelle cleansing molecules that lift oil, dirt, and makeup from the face.

Garnier offers 3 formulas:

Garnier is affordable ($8.99) and widely available is mass. It is available in two sizes.

Bioderma Micellar Water

Bioderma Micellar Water follows the same concept as Garnier, but contains more skin-beneficial ingredients, for instance, Crealine H2O contains cucumber fruit extract, which is hydrating and soothing, whereas the comparable Garnier All-in-1 does not.

Bioderma offers 3 formulas:

Bioderma is also affordable ($6.90-$16.90), costing a little more than Garnier. It is available online and in smaller boutiques and Beautylish and Smallflower.

There are a wide variety of micellar waters on the market as low was $6.99. Check out the widget below to shop:

Tell me: have you tried micellar water? Do you have a favorite? Are you thinking about trying it?

I like micellar water especially as an alternative wipes. I’ve tried Garnier’s and Simple’s and Garnier’s wins out with me because I didn’t have problem once I wiped my eyes with it. The Simple one burns. :-

Garnier. It cost $1.50 USD in my local store. I can feel my face going “Ahhh!” after I use it.

  6. As Told By Ginger

I discover Simple’s Micellar 2 years or so ago and haven’t looked back since. I currently use the Garnier brand . You get quite a bit more for the same price and it doesn’t sting my eyes when removing the mascara. I love it!!!

  7. Blessing

I’ve been using the Garnier micellar water for a couple of years now and it’s the best thing I’ve incorporated into my skin care routine! I only use it when I need to remove makeup

I started using Garnier ~2 weeks ago. I love it and I love that you’ve confirmed that I’m helping my skin. It leaves it so soft and it’s affordable!
