Pretty Serious is an Australian cosmetics brand owned by Kaz and Ben Harris. Kaz and I go WAY back (MakeupAlley’s nail board, back when it was taboo to admit “your number”) and her brand is definitely reflective of her personality: quirky with a touch of vintage. She is also the webmistress of two blogs, Pretty Random and BMovieChicks. Pretty Random is Kaz’s niche nail blog, home of insane HTF vintage polishes. BMovieChicks is a B-movie review site, which is the inspiration behind this collection.
When I received this collection, it immediately reminded me of my husband, also a B-movie aficionado. His favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode is Space Mutiny, an AWFUL South African ’80s sci-fi flick. The Satellite of Love crew ridicules the main character with a plethora of names, all of which would work with this collection.
With the exception of Starship Doom, they all only need two coats for opacity. Two are sugar sparkles (Starship Doom and Menace From Mars) and the rest are spiked with silver hexagonal glitter and smaller silver glitter.
Surfing Alien (aka Splint ChestHair) is very similar to OPI’s holiday 2013 It’s Frosty Outside Liquid Sand. Mad silver on silver action here.
Dimension X (aka Roll FizzleBeef) makes me want a glass of champagne real bad. The glitter looks like bubbles rising up in a glass.
Warp 11 (aka Dirk HardPec) looks a lot like Julie G’s Blueberry Fizz but is a bit more blue.
Deep Space Destroyer (aka Bulk VanderHuge) reminded me of the frost-covered leaves I’ve seen during the great Southern Ice Storm of 2014.
Cosmic Comet (aka Gristle McThornBody) is my favorite of the collection, a dark purple. It looks similar to L’Oreal’s Reign of Studs.
Robot Monster (aka Flint IronStag) is smoky quartz that leans just a little bit purple. The smoky color makes it more interesting than just plain silver.
Starship Doom (aka Smoke ManMuscle) is a shimmery gray sugar sparkle. The shimmer has a bit of a duochrome that I couldn’t accurately capture.
Menace From Mars (aka Punch RockGroin) is a drop-dead red sugar sparkle. The base color reminds me of rich red satin.
I know many are a bit overwhelmed by the surge of textured glitter polish, but a friend of mine put it into a different perspective. She admitted to me that ever since she very recently became a mother, textured glitter polishes were the only ones she had time to apply, let dry and stayed on longer than typical polish. This revelation has helped me out on late Sunday nights by giving me a quick-and-easy option instead of forgoing sleep to let a mani dry. Whether or not you’re burned out from textured glitter, don’t sleep on these pretties!
Speaking of sleep, Space Mutiny is also my husband’s favorite movie to fall asleep to. I, however, prefer college football games and Dateline’s To Catch A Predator. Do you have any weird sleep rituals?
