Taking Care of Your Long-Term Health

How often have you started a diet only to have given up within a few weeks? Or, made a promise to yourself to eat healthily, or to go to the gym more? Only to find that bad habits have crept back in within a few days? You might have even managed to stick to these promises for a little while. But, how often does it last?

Our health is worth more than a short-term commitment. When we’re young, we just expect that we will live to an old age. That we will stay healthy until well past retirement. We don’t worry about our health until it’s started to hit setbacks. If you do want to live a long and healthy life, you need to make some long-term changes, to look after yourself both now and in the future.

Start Saving

Unfortunately, healthcare can be expensive. Even with health insurance, sometimes you’ll need to pay out for treatment or help. We all know this, but so few of us take steps to prepare for it. Make Small Changes

The main reason that we go back on our promises to ourselves, or give up on our lifestyle changes is that we try to do too much. We make bold statements about making massive changes, and it’s just not feasible. Instead, try to make smaller adjustments and swaps. Swap unhealthy snacks for fruit. Swap those fizzy drinks for water. Swap sweet breakfasts for healthy porridge or eggs.

Set Fitness Goals

Fitness is another area where smaller goals will help the most. You could set yourself a large target, like booking ourselves onto a 10k race. But, this can seem overwhelming and impossible. When you go out for your first run and struggle to hit 2.5k, you’ll feel disheartened, and you might give up. Instead, break it down into smaller targets each week. Focus on walking more, going to the gym or working out three times a week and generally increasing your fitness levels.

Have Alcohol Free Days

You don’t need to give up alcohol to lead a healthier lifestyle. In fact, there are some health benefits associated with alcohol, and if the occasional glass of wine helps to reduce your stress levels, it’s no bad thing. But, it is a good idea to cut back. Try to only drink on two evenings a week.

Get More Sleep

Your body needs sleep to recover and to rest. Regularly failing to get enough sleep can start to have an adverse effect on your physical and mental health. So, start going to bed earlier. Most people need around 8 hours of sleep every night to feel their best.

Start Talking

We’re often guilty of ignoring our problems. We worry when we feel unwell, but we say nothing. Try to open up to other people and see a doctor when you need to.
